I had the pleasure of meeting with Margaret Ruggerio Mena, winemaker and owner at Paradise Hills, on a late summer evening. We grabbed a table near the vines outside, sipped on Cayuga White and chatted about the vineyard before heading inside for a behind-the-scenes look at their winemaking.

Every year Sunset Meadow Vineyard in Goshen holds a “Meet the Grapes” event which allows attendees to get up close and personal with their vines, winemakers, and winery story. The 90-minute tour features a tractor ride throughout most of their 38 planted acres, a Q&A session with the winemakers accompanied by a glass of wine, and a tour of their winemaking areas. Typically hosted in late summer, this is an event you should definitely attend to not only learn about their vineyard and practices, but about winemaking in Connecticut in general.

In 1974 Sherman Haight Jr. bought the Wall Street Journal and read all about Dr. Konstantin Frank’s abilities to grow vinifera wines in the Finger Lakes, and thought he would like to do the same in Connecticut. He was so inspired, he flew to Rochester, met with Frank, and decided he would plant vines himself. Today, Haight-Brown Vineyards, Inc. is Connecticut’s oldest winery, opening its doors in 1975. In 1978, the State Legislature passed a Farm Winery Act and Haight Vineyard became Connecticut’s first established winery. He is considered the pioneering father of the Connecticut wine industry. The winery is located in Litchfield, CT, in the northwest part of the state.
